Heart disease. Surveys show that eating fish oil-such as sardines and anchovy-twice a week is associated with a reduced risk of developing heart disease. Taking fish oil supplements for at least six months has been shown to reduce the risk of heart attacks and death in people at high risk of heart disease. Surveys also suggest that the risk of congestive heart failure is lower in elderly adults who have higher levels of EPA fatty acids.

High blood pressure. Many studies report light decreases in blood pressure in people taking fish oil supplements. There is some evidence that this effect is greater for people with moderate to severe hypertension than those with mild hypertension.

High triglycerides and cholesterol. There is strong evidence that omega-3 fatty acids can significantly reduce triglyceride levels in the blood. It also seems that there is a noticeable improvement in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL).
 

Rheumatoid arthritis. Studies show that fish oil supplements could help reduce pain. While relief is often moderate, it may suffice to reduce the need for anti-inflammatory drugs.
